Union Employees Protest Knox County Board Meeting Again
FIRST REPORTED 5:30am 11/27/12 The Knox County Board has approved a budget for the 2013 Fiscal Year, and it includes a change that some union employees still don't like.

The board Monday night approved changes to the budget that include what officials say is a shift of $935,000 into the County Nursing Home budget.

The county says it's always been a part of the overall budget, while AFSCME workers who picketed again Monday night claim someone's lying.

That's been a sticking point in negotiations between the union and the county, and resident Penny Carlson says it all needs to end.

"Negotiations with the nursing home have never, ever taken this long before, it's not necessary. You spent thousands and thousands of dollars on an outside attorney instead of sitting down at the table together and working it out and that can be done."

Carlson also suggested all the back-and-forth about whether or not the nursing home can stay open needs to stop, especially since she claims the county is mandated to keep it open.

AFSCME presented what they claimed were two-thousand petitions from residents urging that the $935,000 line items for retirement benefits be taken back out of the county's budget.
