District 205 Reacts To Council Comments
FIRST REPORTED 3pm 11/27/12 Monday night's Galesburg City Council meeting saw verbal opposition to partial funding of Sundberg Baseball Field at Galesburg High.

The field renovations under discussion Monday night include the city's portion of funding renovations for the field.

The City and the School district have an agreement that goes back to February 2003 that allows use and repairs.

According to school district superintendent for finance Guy Cahill, District 205 doesn't need the funding to complete the Master Facilities plan. The fact that the plan existed seemed to escape many alderman.

Instead, Cahill tells WGIL that funding would be used to enhance the project.

"They are dollars that are called for in an intergovernmental agreement," says Cahill. "We look upon it as I'm sure many of the council people do as an opportunity to invest in the public infrastructure designed to draw people to the community."

The city said that the district requested funding of 1.3 million dollars for repairs and renovations to the field, but several aldermen suggested that because the district raised sales taxes, they wouldn't support additional funding.

No final decisions have been made regarding the city's 2013 budget. Cahill says the district wouldn't speak at the next council meeting unless they requested it.

Negotiating a new deal may be on the table if current discussion is any indicator.
