Former head of auxiliary sheriffs agency charged with theft
An Auxiliary Deputy with the Knox County Sheriffs Department is accused of spending Auxiliary program money for personal gain.
The Sheriffs Department says 41-year old James Nelson of rural Gilson faces charges from a Knox County warrant including Official Misconduct and Theft over Three-Hundred Dollars and was taken to jail.
Sheriffs Department officials say Nelson was the Chief of the Auxiliary Unit until stepping down following his term. But they accuse him of not giving back checkbooks and other financial documents, leaving full-time deputies to seize them.
Turns out, an investigation revealed that some checks were missing, and that Nelson had used them to pay for things like a personal computer, office supplies for his home, personal vehicle repairs, and items for a demolition vehicle he used -- all to the tune of about 33-hundred dollars.
Nelson is being held in jail on 10-thousand dollars bond pending future court dates.
Sheriffs officials say the Auxiliary Sheriffs Program is funded solely by donations -- and is in no way a part of the county budget.
