Chamber Weighs In On City Budget
The Galesburg City Council is currently unable to agree on taxes or a budget; now the Chamber of Commerce is weighing in.

The Chamber announced earlier this week that they are surveying businesses which belong to the Chamber to better understand what business leaders want from their local government.

The City Council discussed tax plans at last Monday's regularly scheduled meeting, but after failing to pass an increase, scheduled a special budget work session. No consensus was reached at that meeting, either.

Executive Director at the Chamber Steven Brody tells WGIL the chamber wants to be good partners in the success of Galesburg.

"Council members are urging for input from community members as to how to resolve [the budget] in leiu of taxes," says Brody "We see that as an opportunity to help."

Brody says the Chamber hopes to have the final word before the end of today.

He went on to say there have been a few responses suggesting that taxes should be raised, but said the overwhelming majority want to see services cut.

According to the 2013 Draft budget, the city plans to spend just over 90-million dollars on staff and services - 70 percent of which is personnel.

Aldermen expressed interest in reworking, or cutting the funding of Sundberg Field at Galesburg High at their budget work session.

Brody tells WGIL he plans to address the council at Monday's City Council meeting.
