No Private Attorney for Woman Accused in Fatal Accident
FIRST REPORTED 3:00pm 11/5/12 A Galesburg woman has apparently changed her mind on the need for legal services in the case where she's accused of killing a Knox College student with her car.

33 year old Lakeesha Smith made a brief appearance Monday morning in Knox County Circuit Court, where Judge James Stewart asked her if a private attorney had been hired as her family had indicated a week ago.

Smith shook her head "no."

Stewart later granted Smith a public defender, and scheduled another hearing for Friday at 11 am.

Smith was arrested last Sunday morning hours after her vehicle allegedly struck and killed Knox College student Tundun Lawani as she was crossing South Street inbetween West and Cedar Streets.

Smith faces charges of Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving Death, Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, and Reckless Homicide.

She reportedly told investigators she left the accident scene because she was nervous.

Smith remains held in the Knox County Jail on $100,000 bond.
