District 205 Proposes Tax Levy Virtually Unchanged
Property owners in the Galesburg School District would likely pay almost no more in their property tax bills next year than they did this year.

That's part of a proposal the District-205 Board's Budget Committee reviewed yesterday and will be considered by the full board Monday night.

Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Guy Cahill says the four-dollars, 20-cents per $100 of assessed value rate would equal a 47 cent raise in the district's portion of next year's tax bill.

That is, Cahill says, as long as the state doesn't do what it's threatening.

"If pensions are pushed down to us, I think all bets need to be off and we need to revisit that. We won't know until January after you have to file your levy that we will have to deal with pensions so we wont be able to change it."

Cahill says the district could handle the situation in two ways: anticipate the worst case and start increasing the levy more now, or be conservative and not increase until you have to.

Property values overall in the district are expected to go up about 2 and 1/3 percent this year, mostly because of increases in commercial and farm property values.
