District Approves Two Designs for Silas Willard School
Silas Willard Elementary School will now have competing designs.

The Galesburg School Board approved a recommendation from administration last night to move into phase two of the master facilities plan.

The original plan called for only making repairs to Silas Willard, but the district decided it may be less expensive to build a new school, entirely.

In order to build a new school, the district must first get approval from the taxpayers, but the district feels voters should have good information to make an informed decision.

Not everyone was in favor of the proposal as Board Member Bob Lindstrom said he doesn't feel there needs to be a new school built.

"If we were to build a new elementary school in Galesburg, we've got to ask ourselves would we build it at this location and I don't think we would for several reasons. One is the size of the school grounds is far less than all the other elementary schools, it's on a very busy street, it's next to a very busy intersection that's arguably the busiest in town."

The measure passed with a vote of 4-2.

The new designs will cost the district an additional 50-thousand dollars.

The board approved the services of "Cordogan Clark and Associates" to draw up remodel designs.

The firms of PSA-Dewberry and Demonica-Kemper will work on designing a new school.
