Galesburg Budget, Levy to be Considered Tonight
A spending plan that Galesburg City officials have said doesn't reflect much growth over the year prior will likely get a stamp of approval tonight.

The Galesburg City Council is expected this evening to give its final approval to the Fiscal Year 2009 Budget. The City says it totals nearly $66 million, over one-third of which goes to the city's general fund, while another one-fourth goes to the city's water needs. And among those $15 million in water needs, the city says, includes the final $10 million for the construction of the city's new water treatment plant at Oquawka.

The city is also planning on a number of infrastructure improvements in 2009, including the proposed reconstruction of a portion of Third Street, parks and recreation improvements, and work at the Galesburg Municipal Airport, among other things.

Galesburg Aldermen tonight will also consider the 2008 property tax levy request. The $7.5 million being asked for is more than last year, but will result in a slightly lower property tax bill for homeowners.

A proposed $2 quarterly increase in the city's garbage rates will also be taken up when the Galesburg City Council convenes at 7:30 tonight inside council chambers at Galesburg City Hall.
