Expert: Blago's Alleged Corruption Puts Other Corrupt Politicians to Shame
Even veteran political watchers are stunned by hearing what Gov. Rod Blagojevich is accused of doing: essentially auctioning off a U.S. Senate appointment. Kent Redfield, professor emeritus of political science at the University of Illinois at Springfield, says it's impressive even by Illinois standards.

"That you would treat an appointment to the U.S. Senate the way that we kind of expect ward committeemen in Chicago to treat renewing a liquor license or a building permit is just amazing," he said. "And it's also amazing that the governor would engage in this kind of activity knowing that he was under close scrutiny. So it is a combination of arrogance and stupidity that is pretty staggering."

Redfield says he believes the arrest came when it did to stop Blagojevich from appointing someone to succeed President-elect Barack Obama in the U.S. Senate. He says the other 99 senators have to take a vote to accept the appointment.
