Governor Could Still Make Obama Replacement Selection
While the U.S. attorney says the governor was arrested because of fear that he would "taint" the vacated U.S. Senate seat, looking for the highest bidder to fill the spot, the governor still has the power to appoint someone.

Although he's charged with wrongdoing, Rod Blagojevich is still the governor, with all the powers that come with the position.

U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald says the arrest brought everything "out into the sunlight." He says it would be a bad time for someone to make a cash contribution to the governor.

He says lawmakers and the public needed to see what the governor was scheming so appropriate action could be taken.

That action could include the impeachment of the governor or legislators in Springfield could pass a law to require a special election to pick a replacement for the Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama.
