Tax Levy Approved for Monmouth-Roseville Schools; Superintendent Leaving District
An increase in property values this year in the Monmouth-Roseville School District is leading the district to lower the levy rate for homeowners.

The Monmouth-Roseville School Board Tuesday night voted to approve a property tax levy of $3.9 millions for 2008, compared to $3.8 million last year.

District-238 Superintendent Martin Payne tells WGIL while no one can tell what next year will bring given the economy, this year was pretty good in terms of property values. "When I talked with County officials as well as our auditor, we believed that we were looking at some growth this year," Payne said, "maybe about three-to-five percent growth. So we were able to do our levy accordingly."

Payne says the levy rate will decrease to $3,92 per $100 of assessed valuation for 2008 tax bills distributed in the spring, compared to $4.04 last year. He says it's not a large decrease, but still good to pass along to taxpayers.

The District-238 Board Tuesday night also approved the sale of $2.3 million in Life Safety Bonds -- the result of the district's required 10-year life-safety audit. If approved by the state, Payne says a lot of the money will go toward the replacement of windows in all district buildings, along with some other projects being added in as well.

The board also learned that Payne will step down at the end of the school year in order to take a similar position in Metamora. Payne has only been with the district for three years.
