Lawmaker: Quinn Shouldn't Appoint Obama Replacement Either
Not so fast. That's the message from State Sen. Christine Rodogno (R-Lemont), who will become the Senate minority leader next month, about the lieutenant governor appointing a new U.S. senator. Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn says if and when he becomes governor, he would immediately appoint someone to fill the vacant seat.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich has been charged with corruption, with the federal complaint largely based on allegations that the governor was bartering with Senate candidates for help raising campaign cash and finding jobs for him and his wife.

Rodogno says the thought of the governor's running mate appointing a senator is "absolutely ludicrous." She says Quinn has been part of Blagojevich's administration, and thinks he's too close to the taint that Blagojevich has brought to the state. Quinn says he and the governor haven't spoken with each other in almost two years.

Quinn usually pushes for voters to make decisions rather than politicians, but in this case he says there isn't time or money for a special election. Republicans such as Rodogno are accusing Quinn of flip-flopping for a chance at power. Lawmakers are back in Springfield Monday and Tuesday to take up the special election issue.
