The Orpheum Theatre is pleased to announce the Spring 2009 Red Carpet Series.
(Photo by Comedia) Frank Ferrante in "An Evening with Groucho" kicks off the Spring 2009 Red Carpet Season on Sunday, March 15. Award-winning actor/director/playwright Frank Ferrante recreates his PBS, New York and London acclaimed portrayal of legendary comedian Groucho Marx in this fast paced 90 minutes of hilarity. The two-act comedy consists of the best Groucho one-liners, anecdotes and songs including "Hooray For Captain Spalding," and "Lydia, the Tattooed Lady." The audience literally becomes part of the shoe as Ferrante ad-libs his way throughout the performance in grand Groucho style. Accompanied by his onstage pianist, Jim Furmston, Ferrante portrays the young Groucho of stage and film and reacquaints us with the likes of brothers Harpo, Chico, Zeppo and Gummo, Charlie Chaplin, W.C. Fields, Greta Garbo, Marx foil, Margaret Dumont and MGM's Louis B. Mayer. Sponsored by Dick Blick.
("Our American Cousin" photo submitted by Orpheum Theatre) As part of the year-long Lincoln celebrations, the Orpheum Theatre proudly presents "Our American Cousin." This farcical comedy gained notoriety as the last play Lincoln ever saw when he was assassinated half-way through the play's third act at the Ford Theater in Washington, D.C. Regardless of its now infamous place in American history, the play contains important cultural undertones as its plot is based on the introduction of an awkward, boorish American to his aristocratic English relatives. "Our American Cousin" is a co-production effort between the Orpheum Theatre and Monmouth College Theatre Department. Don’t miss "Our American Cousin" for two performances Saturday and Sunday, April 4 and 5.

(Photo submitted by Orpheum Theatre) Theatrical adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, rounds out the 2009 Spring Red Carpet Series. The story of To Kill a Mockingbird is simple, yet it speaks deeply and eloquently of human nature and of human values. The action is set in the 1930s in a sleepy Southern town, where Atticus Finch, an attorney and the widowed father of two young children, stands against his fellow townspeople by defending a young black man falsely accused of relations with a white woman. Through every step and with every word, Atticus instills in his children the traditional moral values of respect for others, honesty, courage, integrity, and above all, responsibility for one’s actions. Without fanfare or bravado, Atticus Finch assumes prominence as a true American hero. At one point he tells his son that he has learned "what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what."
Produced by the Montana Repertory Theatre, one of the oldest and most-respected touring theatrical companies in the nation, To Kill A Mockingbird concludes the Spring Red Carpet Series on Wednesday, May 6. Sponsored by Thomas Knapp - REMAX Realty.
