Garbage Rates Going Up in Galesburg
It didn't require much discussion, but Galesburg aldermen have rubber-stamped an increased price for garbage pickup in the City of Galesburg.

The Galesburg City Council Monday night okayed a $2 increase in garbage collection rates per quarter, effective January first -- part of a five-year contract the city signed with Waste Management last year.

First Ward Alderman Ken Goad says as far as he's concerned, garbage pickup in Galesburg is a value, even if it is going up to $41 per quarter. "This is a really excellent service that we're getting for an additional approximately 15-cents a week," Goad said. "The only way that I could see that it could be improved, is if we had unlimited brush pickup, But we can't do that. We have good, excellent service."

City officials say Waste Management have made a number of improvements to their service in recent months, making the increase in rates seemingly well worth it.

Aldermen also signed off Monday on a two-percent cost of living salary adjustment for all non-union city employees, and raises for employees making minimum wage, reflecting the state's next increase in minimum wage in July of 2009.
