| Exchange Club Names December Student of the Month |
The Exchange Club of Galesburg's December "Youth-of-the-Month" for 2008-2009 is Monica Remmes.
The third honoree for this school year is the daughter of Dominic and Jennifer Remmes, 2636 Costa Dr., Galesburg, who home-schooled their daughter for much of her educational career.
Monica is a senior at Galesburg High School where she has a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She is a principal's scholar, a track and cross-county athlete, an actor, a singer, an artist and still finds time to volunteer at a food pantry and teen court.
She plans to continue her education at a four-year school, most likely Catholic University of America or Benedictine College.
Monica is one of six Youths-of-the-Month who will be eligible to compete for the prestigious Galesburg Exchange Club Youth-of-the-Year award which will be announced at a special banquet in early April. The program honors outstanding students who have exhibited excellence in academics and leadership. As part of their recognition, winners write an essay on the topic, America's youth - stepping forward to change the beat of America.
The winner there goes on to compete for the Lincolnland District Youth-of-the-Year honor and potentially national recognition and increasingly larger scholarships.
The Exchange Club is a group of men and women from the area who meet every Friday at noon at the Kensington to hear an informative program. They have been involved since their founding in 1924 with a variety of community service projects; it's Exchangites who pass out flags before local parades, honor a Youth-of-the-Month and Youth-of-the-Year during the school year, recognize worthy law enforcement officers, firefighters and contribute funds from the club's youth foundation to a variety of local organizations. Guests and new members are always welcome.
