Statewide Deer Harvest Down
Illinois hunters killed more than 100,000 deer during the just concluded firearms season. The season saw 11,000 fewer deer killed than last year in Illinois. That fact is a preliminary number from the state Department of Natural Resources.

Spokeswoman for the Department of Natural Resources, Stacey Solano, says the seven day total for deer killed in the firearm season is almost 106,000. That compares to almost 117,000 last year in the same period.

Solano says the timing of the season as well as the weather may be why the preliminary 2008 count is more than 10,000 short of last year's total.

"This year, our firearm deer season was a little later in the season than we've seen in the past few years" Solano said. "The cold weather during both the first and second portions of the firearm season, could have affected being out and about, as well as some hunters being out and about."

The firearm season is always the weekend before and the weekend after Thanksgiving. Top counties in the firearm season were Pike with 3,342, Fulton with 2,688, and Adams with 2,649.

Locally, Knox County totaled 1,618, down from 1,662 last year and Warren County totaled 738, up 17 deer from last year.
