"Make it Monmouth" in December
Officials in Monmouth are hoping residents do something during the Christmas season they think some might not otherwise do.

Mayor Rod Davies has issued a proclamation declaring this month "Make it Monmouth" month -- part of an effort by the Monmouth-Area Chamber of Commerce encouraging residents to shop locally.

Monmouth City Administrator Eric Hanson tells WGIL the way he sees it, now is as important as ever for Monmouth residents to shop Monmouth. "We really believe, in these economic times, it's important to shop locally, keep our dollars local, keep people employed local," Hanson said. "The proclamation was kind of a joint effort between the Chamber and the City to promote the opportunities there are here in the city to shop locally, get those holiday gifts locally."

Hanson says he realizes plenty of people are indeed already doing that, given that $192 million in retail is being spent within a 10-mile radius of Monmouth, according to this year's retail analysis done by the Texas firm Buxton, but that there are still some dollars leaving the area.

He says there's a lot of good being done in terms of retail growth in the Monmouth area, but that the work has to continue.
