Amtrak Station in Galesburg Likely to Expand
Galesburg's Amtrak station will be getting a facelift of sorts, assuming the state and federal governments do their parts.

The Galesburg City Council Monday night approved allowing the city to apply for grants that would, if approved, pay for the architect and engineering fees in order to expand the Amtrak Depot, and build more parking lots around it.

City Manager Dane Bragg says the federal funds that the state is in charge of administering, are dollars he's pretty sure the city can get. "These happen to be smaller grant pools," Bragg said. "The state has been looking for projects in recent years, and we've actually been working to package smaller projects over multiple years, and the two that (aldermen) approved the application for (Monday night) is an example of that."

In fact, Bragg says the city has been talking about the proposed Amtrak depot expansion with the Illinois Department of Transportation since April, and believes they've been supportive so far of the project.

Bragg says there is some hope the city will receive the money -- none of which local tax dollars will be required to match if it's approved.
