Additional Galebsurg Transit Bus Route to be Considered by City Council Tonight
State-mandated free bus rides for senior citizens and the disabled have resulted in quite an increase in ridership for the Galesburg Transit system, and that's leading to some proposed changes the Galesburg City Council is being asked to approve.

Aldermen tonight will vote on the changes, as recommended by the city's Public Transportation Advisory Committee. They include the creation of a route called the "Express Loop" which would run between Sandburg Mall, the Seminary Square Shopping Center, and downtown Galesburg.

Transit officials say that would ease a burden on the city's Number Three "Red Route," and would also serve the Knox College area better -- something college security head John Schlaf says he supports. There would also be some other changes to the Red Route, along with the Blue and Green routes aldermen will be asked to approve.

While the city would also accept the donation of a used bus from Bridgeway that could help service the route, the city says the additional route would cost almost one-hundred-thousand dollars, which includes the hiring of two part-time drivers and other expenses.

Aldermen will consider the bus route changes, and a new proposed contract with the Galesburg Regional Economic Development Association, when they meet at 7:30 tonight at City Hall.
