Quinn Changes Mind on Special Election
Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn says lawmakers in Springfield should vote to hold a special election to fill the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by President-elect Barack Obama. But Quinn is also campaigning for a temporary appointment until the election is held.

Speaking in Chicago today Monday, Quinn again called on Gov. Rod Blagojevich to resign or step aside so that an appointment can be made. Quinn added that impeachment proceedings against Blagojevich should move forward. He says impeachment should be the first priority for lawmakers.

House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) has appointed a special committee to review the situation and recommend whether Blagojevich should be impeached.

Madigan says the committee will work every day except holidays such as Christmas and Christmas Eve. Once the committee comes up with a recommendation, the full House will decide whether to file impeachment charges against the governor.

Quinn says he has confidence in the special committee and believes they will work quickly.

Blagojevich was arrested last week on federal corruption charges, including trying to sell an appointment to the vacant Senate seat for personal gain.
