Abingdon Schools Joining Wind Energy Consortium
The Abingdon School district expects to save tens of thousands of dollars on its utility bills at its two learning centers.

The District 217 School Board Wednesday night unanimously agreed to join the Illinois Energy Consortium, a joint energy purchasing group that aims to lower the utility costs for the state's school districts and community colleges. The schools can then use the extra money they save on power bills for things like technology, staff development and other educational goals.

Abingdon Schools Superintendent Tami Roskamp tells WGIL the new arrangement will mean big savings for District 217. "The rate we got for our energy consortium was six cents (per killowatt). In the past we've been paying nine cents," Roskamp said. "MSI is the subcontractor of the energy consortium, and (their representative) talked to us, and (the change) is going to save us about $40,000."

The six cents is per kilowatt and the contract with the consortium is for two years. Ameren Energy Marketing of Peoria is the program administrator.

Roskamp says the school district is only in the arrangement for electricity because its current contract for gas isn't up until October.

In other business, the school board unanimously approved a five-year bus leasing contract with Midwest Transit Equipment. The cost is $9,800 for each of the district's five buses annually, a price building and grounds supervisor Mark Branch says is well under budget.
