Lawmakers Reject Bill to Ban Trans Fats in Schools
As a parent, you may think trans-fats have no place in your child's diet. But most members of the Illinois House believe a ban on trans-fats have no place in state law.

State Rep. LaShawn Ford (D-Chicago) tried to get the bill through the House veto session, against very vocal opposition. Lawmakers said school districts have enough to worry about, and may incur additional costs if forced to change the menus. Rep Jerry Mitchell (R-Sterling) says these decisions should be made at the local level anyway.

State Rep. Roger Eddy (R-Hutsonville), himself a school superintendent, went so far as to call Ford's measure a "trophy bill" – as, under a lighthearted House custom, a bill which garners 100 or more "no" votes earns its sponsor a trophy. But State Rep. Eddie Washington (D-Waukegan) says in wartime, America cannot afford to let the obesity epidemic continue, for fear the nation's youth will be too fat to fight.
