| Fire Destroys West Losey Quick Stop |
UPDATED 8:49am, 12/19/8 A Galesburg gas station and convenience store is being described as a total loss following a fire early Friday morning.
Galesburg Fire Battalion Chief Craig Brady says crews were called to the Quick Stop at 188 West Losey Street around 1:15am Friday, after a Galesburg Police Officer says he spotted smoke coming from inside the facility.
Brady tells WGIL by the time his crews arrived on scene, the fire quickly became difficult to attack. "During the initial part of the fire attack, the fire intensified, and it just continued on through the night," Brady said. "Eventually, the roof collapsed on them. There was a large amount of smoke, a large amount of fire for the structure."
Crews remain on the scene putting out hot spots.
Brady says no one was inside at the time of the fire, and that the store's owner had left for the night, most likely well before the fire started. He says the Quick Stop's underground gas tanks were not a factor in putting out the fire, and in situations like that, usually aren't.
There were signs on gas pumps that indicated that the facility was out of gas.
There were no injuries. Brady says a cause has yet to be officially determined, nor a damage estimate in dollars.
