LaHood Picked for Obama Transportation Post
A Republican Illinois congressman gets a spot in the Obama administration.

President-elect Barack Obama has named U.S. Rep. Ray LaHood (R-Peoria) to be secretary of transportation. While they are of different political parties, LaHood says they share a philosophy when it comes to this particular agency.

"His agenda for the Department of Transportation is my agenda for the Department of Transportation," LaHood said at a news conference Friday in Chicago.

That philosophy is to use transportation projects as an economic stimulus, putting people to work and fixing up roads, bridges and transit systems in the process.

LaHood served 14 years in Congress in a district that includes part of Knox Country, but did not run for re-election this year. He has been part of efforts to make the floor of the House of Representatives less partisan.
