GOP Leaders Say Blagojevich Must Go
Illinois Republican leaders are saying that anything short of Gov. Rod Blagojevich's resignation is unacceptable.

They're reacting to the governor's first public statement since his arrest last week on federal corruption charges. Illinois Republican Party chairman Andy McKenna says Blagojevich should spare voters any more heartache and quit.

State Senator Senator Pam Altoff (R-McHenry) says she was hoping for a resignation, and certainly would have liked to have heard an apology. State Senator Matt Murphy (R-Palatine) says while the governor promised to fight, fight, fight, the people want him to resign, resign, resign. Illinois House Minority Leader Tom Cross (R-Oswego) agrees. He says Illinois image couldn't get any worse.

Republicans continue their mantra of demanding that Democrats approve a special election to fill the vacant seat in the U.S. Senate, instead of waiting for a resignation by the governor, impeachment, or conviction that would give the appointment authority to the lieutenant governor.

State Senator Christine Rodogno (R-Lemont), who takes over in January as minority leader, said, "Governor Blagojevich's combative statement to the media [Friday] once again points up the need for a special election to fill President-Elect Obama's U.S. Senate seat. It is clear this governor intends to remain in office despite the scandal enveloping him and the State of Illinois."
