Slight Drop in Galesburg Unemployment
The city of Galesburg bucked the general trend of higher unemployment rates between October and November.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security reports all 12 of the state's metropolitan areas experienced over-the-year unemployment increases for the 19th consecutive month. The Rockford metro area had the highest unemployment rate at 10.4 percent.

The rates were up between 1-tenth and one-half of a percentage point in the Galesburg area, but there weren't across the board increases.

Galesburg's rate dropped two-tenths of a percent over the last month to 7.7 percent. Knox County's rate remains unchanged at 7.2 percent. Modest increases in unemployment are reported in Warren, Fulton, Henry and Henderson counties. The rate for the Galesburg area is 7 percent. It was 4.8 percent in November of 2007.

Galesburg, Knox county, Warren County and the rest of the area is seeing unemployment rates that range from 2.1 to 2.5 percent higher this year compared to last.

The state says over-the-year non-farm payroll jobs declined in the Galesburg area. Officials say job losses occurred in the Leisure-Hospitality and Manufacturing sectors.

IDES Director Maureen O'Donnell says a federal stimulus package would help combat the negative effects the national economy is having on the the economy in Illinois.
