Andrews Lounge Shooting Ruled Homicide
It didn't take long for a Knox County Coroner's Jury to determine that the shooing 3 1/2 months ago that left one Galesburg man dead and another Galesburg man behind bars was a homicide.

The jury returned that ruling during an inquest Tuesday night into the death of 29-year old Deriek Lawless, and officially ruled that the death was due to gunshot wounds in the head and trunk of the body.

Galesburg Police Investigator Damon Shea testified during the inquest that Lawless and another man had apparently been in a fight around 2am August 23 in the parking lot of Andrews Lounge when, Shea says, a man later identified as 32-year old Marlon Brown walked up to the two, and allegedly shot Lawless twice. Lawless was later taken to a Galesburg hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Shea says he doesn't know what led up to the fight, and coroner Mark Thomas says a toxicology test turned up alcohol, methamphetamine, marijuana, and the drug ecstasy in Lawless' system at the time of his death.

Brown was arrested not long after the crime and faces felony murder charges. He's currently being held in the Knox County Jail on $1 million bond. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for next month.
