The Knox County Board is doign its part to try to improve the communication with various local agencies during emergency situations.

The Knox County Board Tuesday night approved the purchase of five new specialized radios for the new cars in the Sheriffs' Department. The specialized radios will be able to operate on a narrower band -- a requirement that the Federal Government is imposing on emergency response agencies all around the country. Henry County and State Police are already using the new StarCom radios with the streamlined frequencies in their districts.

Knox County Sheriff David Clague tells WGIL the main goal of providing new radios to his department is to do just want the feds want. "The primary purpose for the purchasing of the narrower-band radios is to make certain we can stay in communication with the smaller communities," Clague said.

The Knox County Board also voted to approve a new union contract with landfill employees, as well as the approval of a garbage collection contract with the City of Kewanee. Board member Lowell Mannhardt requested the purchase of a new spotter truck and 4 new trailers to help with the contract specifications. The cost was over $100,000 for the both the new truck and the trailers to haul the trash. Manhardt said there was a sense of urgency for purchasing the new trucks because the contract with Kewanee begins January 1st.
