AAA: Gas Prices For December Continued to Fall
The price for a gallon of gas in Illinois continues to tumble.

The last time gas prices were as low as they are now was five years ago in January 2004 when the average price of a gallon of gas was $1.65. Last year at this time, the average price of a gallon of gas in the state was 3-dollars and one cent.

AAA Chicago Motor Club spokesman Beth Mosher says prices haven't reached bottom yet. She expects prices to continue to fall into the new year. The big reasons are the price of crude oil, dropping from $147 a barrel in the summer to $43 now. Mosher says the public knows that the price of gasoline is subject to wild fluctuations.

"Prices are low, at least for the time being," Mosher said. "But they (the public) know that gas prices are very volatile. We pay $1.75 one day, and the next week or the next month, we could be paying over $2. We just never know."

Mosher says even though the price of gasoline is down sharply in recent months, demand remains low because people still find it necessary to conserve.

After a drop last month of $1.04, gas prices in Illinois fell another 60 cents this month, reaching a December statewide average of $1.66, according to AAA.

An unofficial survey of Galesburg gas stations has an average price of nearly $1.71 as of Christmas Eve.
