Prime Time for Bald Eagle Watching
It's the time of year again when bald eagles head to open water along some of Illinois' rivers.

Jan. 3 marks the 25th anniversary for eagle watching at Lock and Dam 13 on the Mississippi River.

Pam Steinhaus, spokeswoman for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, says the location is perfect for the bald eagles because of the open water and the fishing. She says the opening and closing of the lock sometimes stuns fish, making them easy prey for the birds.

Eagle watching is also popular in LaSalle County at Starved Rock State Park along the Illinois River. While eagles can be spotted at the park during much of the winter, a free event Jan. 24-25 offers a tour with volunteers who are knowledgeable about eagles and their habits.

Officials offer these tips when viewing eagles.

* Avoid disturbing the birds. Do not approach them on foot.
* Stay as far away from the birds as possible. Binoculars are essential.
* Stay in your vehicle if viewing nearby birds.
* Park off the main road.
* Do not stop on the road or look for eagles while driving.
