Gas Prices Down, Especially for Truck Drivers
The falling price of diesel fuel is a big relief for truckers.

Diesel fuel in Illinois is selling for an average of $2.59 -- not as cheap as gasoline, but far down from the price of $3.50 last year at this time, or the record high of $4.86 in July. (SOURCE: Fuel Gauge Report)

Don Schaefer of the Springfield-based Mid West Truckers Association, says during the summer, truckers faced the hardship of not being able to afford the $1,000 it took to fill their fuel tanks.

Schaefer says truckers often lacked the cash or credit to fill up, a "dilemma which really hurt the trucking industry, especially in the summer and the fall," he said.

Schaefer says truckers now typically have a fuel surcharge in their contracts, insulating them from fuel price fluctuations, since they quote prices for jobs that may be months away, not knowing what fuel will cost at the time
