ROWVA Not Yet Ready for CSC's "EduNet"
A wireless internet network that is designed to make it easier for students throughout the Carl Sandburg College district to take courses closer to home isn't yet in one Knox County School District.

The ROWVA School Board recently tabled for the second time a proposal to join Carl Sandburg College's "EduNet" network. District-208 Superintendent Lloyd Little says the internet provider EduNet contracts with -- East Moline-based DerbyTech -- would have to put a wireless internet antenna on top of Oneida's water-tower with city council approval in order to help feed the network.

Little tells WGIL what else DerbyTech can then do with that connection is what has the school board concerned. "The company that contracts with Carl Sandburg (College) to bring in the wireless internet (DerbyTech), has the ability to sell internet services to consumers in the Oneida area," Little said.

Little says the school board feels as if that might take away business from the locally-owned Oneida Telephone Company, which he says has been good to work with in terms of providing internet service to ROWVA schools. He says he'll be talking with Oneida Telephone to see if they can work with DerbyTech to work toward getting "EduNet" up and going for ROWVA.

CSC's "EduNet" provides internet-based distance learning and dual credit opportunities throughout the 10 counties of the college's district, without students necessarily having to travel to any of the three college campuses.
