Second Firearm Deer Season Starts Today
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources hopes hunter -- and everyone else -- will be extra careful starting today (Thursday), since this is the start of the second weekend of the firearm deer season. Spokesman Chris McCloud says four accidents were reported in the first weekend, which ran Nov. 21-23. None were firearm-related. Each was a tree stand accident, and one of those was fatal.

McCloud says the state usually sees at least one gun-related death during the season. He attributes the lack of a firearm-related deer hunting death so far in part to hunter safety classes. He hopes for no such death reports this weekend either.

During the first segment of the firearm season, hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary total of 71,894 deer. The top county harvest totals were Pike (2,194), Adams (1,900), Fulton (1,878), Randolph (1,770), and Jefferson (1,650).

Other Illinois firearm deer hunting opportunities:

* Muzzleloader-only deer season, Dec. 12-14
* Late-winter antlerless-only deer season in select counties, Jan. 16-18, 2009 (permits were issued previously for each of these seasons)
* Special Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) deer season in Boone, DeKalb, McHenry, and Winnebago counties and in Kane County west of Route 47 is also scheduled for Jan. 16-18, 2009 (permits available over the counter through DNR Direct license vendors in those counties beginning in mid December)
* Archery deer season concludes Jan. 15, 2009.
