Teens Attending Leadership Conference Today
Students from every high school in Knox County are converging in Galesburg to learn how to do something that a Knox County Health Department official hopes will serve them very well later on.

The Health Department is hosting its first-ever teen leadership conference called "I Can Lead a Nation with a Microphone" today on the Knox College campus, and community health educator Erin Olson says nearly 90 sophomores have been invited to take part in a series of seminars on different leadership skills.

Olson tells WGIL there's a reason for selecting sophomores instead of any other higher or lower grade level. "We're not hitting the freshman who, sometimes, get to do quite a bit of freshman stuff," Olson said. "Sophomores we hit so they will be there for the next three years, to finish out their sophomore, junior, senior years, to hopefully take this information back. Hopefully, we're planning on some of them coming back next year and helping us plan the second leadership summit for the kids."

Olson says topics for the various seminars include discussions on dealing with stress, becoming more eco-friendly, team-building, how to communicate better with other people, and on avoiding dating violence.

The seminar is being funded, Olson says, through a grant from the State Department of Public Health, along with one from the Galesburg Community Foundation.
