Knoxville School Board to Approve Tax Levy Later This Month
Property values in the Knoxville School District seem to have increased this year, but the Superintendent says he doesn't plan on asking for that much more money from taxpayers.

The Knoxville School Board later this month will vote on a 2008 levy request that, Larry Carlton says in November, tentatively totaled $3.7 million -- just $57,000 more than the 2007 request.

Carlton says while property values are expected to be higher, they're not going to be as high as even he thought they would be. "I was looking at $80 million," Carlton said. "In talking to the county assessor, right now we're a tad under $79 million. I will call her a couple days prior to (the school board's) December meeting, and make sure it hasn't taken a big hike. We do not want to leave funds on the table."

Property in District-202 was valued at roughly $78.2 million in 2007. Carlton says the total levy should be $4.71 per $100 of assessed value, versus the amount 2007 levy request of nearly $4.74.

A Truth in Taxation Hearing is not required, but Carlton says the district will have one anyway December 17th.
