Stimulus Projects Cost City Less than Expected
The City of Galesburg apparently has some extra federal economic stimulus dollars on its hands.

Aldermen Monday night voted to amend agreements with the state for three construction projects done recently and were funded with stimulus cash. City Manager Dane Bragg says the effect of that is that not as much Motor Fuel Tax money will be used on one of the projects, putting the unused stimulus dollars on it instead.

Bragg says the city got pretty lucky bidding out the projects in question.

"Under the proposed amendments, we would require than was necessary to complete the Carl Sandburg Drive and Knox Street (resurfacing) projects, mainly because the bids came in at less than our original estimate when we submitted those agreements to (Illinois Department of Transportation)," Bragg said.

Resurfacings of parts of Carl Sandburg Drive, Knox Street, and South Seminary Street all occurred over the summer. He says in terms of the Seminary Street project, only $10,000 instead of over $50,000 in will now be paid for with motor fuel tax money.

The Galesburg City Council also approved its $23 million budget for the coming calendar and fiscal years. The council worked for months on the budget through various city-led work sessions.
