City Council Approves Loan for Women's Clothing Store
Plans are officially moving forward for a pair of Galesburg women to open up their new women's clothing boutique.

That's after the Galesburg City Council Monday night approved a $30,000 revolving loan to Kim Lakis and Erin Woodward in support of their opening of a new store called "Denim and Pearls" February first.

The store will take over the former Landscaping Solutions property at 108 South Seminary Street.

Woodward told aldermen she moved back to Galesburg over a year and a half ago, and says she and Lakis thought about locating the store somewhere else, but didn't.

"We were excited about the opportunity of starting a boutique, and looked at different areas around here, whether it be Peoria, the Quad Cities, or Galesburg," Woodward said. "We want to build a tradition in Galesburg. We both have daughters that we'd like to take over the boutique in, I don't, know, 15 or 20 years when we're ready to retire, and continue the tradition in Galesburg, and have our family want to stay here like we have."

Lakis and Woodward were looking at $100,000 in start-up costs in order to get "Denim and Pearls" open. In addition to the revolving loan, another $10,000 was expected to be awarded to them in the form of a Business Innovation Grant pending the outcome of the loan.

Aldermen approved the annual property tax levy Monday night, and had virtually no discussion as they approved the $23 million Fiscal Year 2010 Budget.
