New Engineer for Abingdon
The firm remains the same, but the city of Abingdon from now on will have a new engineer.

Kevan Cooper, who's been the city's engineer for a number of years, told the city council Monday night that - with its blessing - Neil Smith, a resident of Abingdon, will replace him. Both Cooper and Smith are employed by Bruner, Cooper and Zuck, which has provided engineering services for the city for a decade.

Cooper says the shuffle is due to a pending retirement. "Steve Bruner from our firm has announced that he's going to retire at the end of this year," Cooper said. "Because of that, we're making some adjustments internally as far as what engineers from our office cover (various) city council meetings."

Cooper also told the council that the contractor handling the city's residential water meter replacement project plans to begin the work on Monday. He says the company has received 200 calls for appointments from residents, a number Cooper called a good response to the notices that have gone out to residents.

The notices, in the form of cards, have on them a toll-free number to call to make an appointment to switch out the old meters with new ones. The project involves 1,200 meters and residents can call for appointments between 8 a-m and 5 p-m during the week and Saturday's between 8 a-m and noon.
