Abingdon to Start Replacing Water Meters Next Week
A major project in Abingdon that might cause some minor inconveniences is expected to be finished in a couple of months.

The contractor, Professional Meters Inc., has sent out notices to residents whose homes have meters that need to be changed to new, upgraded touch-read units. The notices, in the form of cards that should have arrived in the mail, include a toll-free number to call to schedule an appointment.

City engineer Kevan Cooper told the city council Monday night the contractor wants to begin next week.

"They plan on starting December 14th," Cooper said. "Since they've had so many responses already, three crews have the project at the same time. They're probably looking at two months to complete the project, so, hopefully, by Mid-February, they're going to have it wrapped up."

Cooper says the contractor, which is based out of Morris, Illinois, has received around 200 responses so far from the public. The city is having 1,200 residential water meters replaced.

Abingdon received a $250,000 no-interest federal stimulus loan to pay for the project. The city does not have to pay back one-fourth of the loan amount.

Residents can call for an appointment to have the meter in their home replaced between 8 a-m and 5 p-m during the week, and between 8 a-m and noon on Saturdays.
