Humane Society Loses Out in City's Agency Funding
The Knox County Humane Society won't be getting any more money from the City of Galesburg outside of what is committed to in a contract.

The Galesburg City Council decided that during a special work session on funding it would provide to various agencies Monday afternoon. And while most of the dozen agencies that ask for money won't be getting all that they asked for, the Humane Society won't be getting any of the $25,000 they asked for.

The City already has two years remaining on a contract with the Humane Society worth $230,000 a year, but Humane Society President Ned Anderson says the extra money they were requesting really would have helped.

"We submitted this request basically to help offset our costs of our building, make some improvements on our building," Anderson said. "We do have a city contract. Quite frankly, that city contract does not pay for running the (Prairieland Animal Welfare Center), doesn't pay for all the programming at the animal shelter. And without fundraising and what we do to raise funds, added to the city contract, that's what runs the shelter."

Anderson says public contributions to the Humane Society and the Prairieland Animal Welfare Center have dropped significantly in recent years, and a contract with Knox County, he says, doesn't begin to cover its true costs for their animal control work.

Mayor Sal Garza told Anderson he'd work with the Society on different ways they can get they money they need.
