No Endorsement for Governor from AFL-CIO
The Illinois AFL-CIO is remaining neutral in the Democratic primary for governor.

Illinois AFL-CIO President Michael T. Carrigan says both Gov. Pat Quinn and Comptroller Dan Hynes sought the labor group's endorsement, but couldn't get the delegates needed.

"The delegates in the room, over 120, just simply were split," Carrigan said after the endorsement session Tuesday in Rosemont, and that prevented either candidate from getting the two-thirds necessary for an endorsement.

The AFL-CIO also did not endorse in the comptroller's race.

State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias won the nod in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, and State Sen. Terry Link (D-Waukegan) won the endorsement in the six-way Democratic primary for lieutenant governor.

The AFL-CIO is an umbrella group for labor unions representing roughly 1 million workers in Illinois. Carrigan says the group will be making contributions at least in the six-figure range to Giannoulias, with more resources available since the group did not endorse in the race for governor.

The competition for labor endorsements is stiff in the Democratic primary for governor, with candidates on several occasions securing the nod of state labor councils, while influential locals of the same union endorsing a different candidate.
