Monzo Makes Court Appearance; Preliminary Hearing Date Set
The Knox County elected official accused of stealing money from the political party she's affiliated with has made another court appearance.

County Recorder of Deeds Paula Monzo made a brief appearance in Knox County Circuit Court Tuesday; it was her first with Public Defender Karl Johnson.

Monzo faces a felony charge of Theft Over Three-Hundred Dollars, for allegedly taking around $3,500 from the checking account of the Knox County Democratic Central Committee during a one-year timeframe, of which she was its treasurer.

Monzo told police after being arrested a month ago she did take money from the account, and that she was having trouble paying bills and had a drug habit.

She is not accused of misappropriating any county funds, though a special audit will determine that for sure.

Judge Dwayne Morrison set a January 26th preliminary hearing date -- in part, to coincide with the schedule of special prosecutor Chuck Zalar, who's been assigned to the case.

Zalar told Morrison Tuesday that he's responded to a request for discovery in the case, and that it should have been turned over to Johnson by now.

Monzo is out of jail on bond and is still believed to be working as Recorder, though she was observed leaving the courthouse for the day not long after her mid-morning hearing Tuesday.
