Candidate for Lt. Governor Visits Galesburg
A candidate for Lieutenant Governor says the state of Illinois, and the Galesburg area, have all the tools necessary for economic recovery, and says if he's elected, he'll make sure the rest of the world knows that.

State Senator Matt Murphy stopped in Galesburg Tuesday speaking with area media outlets.

Murphy says he knows of the railroad's importance to the Galesburg area and the state as a whole, and says that, Illinois' standing as a central transportation hub, a good workforce, and a top-notch education system will all help bring jobs back to the state.

Murphy tells WGIL it's a different approach than just a couple years ago.

"What you've got to do, is send a message to the job creators that, one, you want them and value them," Murphy said. "When Rod Blagojevich was pushing the Gross Receipts Tax a few years ago, demonizing job creators, if you're one of the decision-makers, why would you come into an environment like that? As a down payment on a better future, I think we should look at -- we double-taxed corporate income. Phase one of those out, say 'here, here's a step in the right direction'."

Murphy says the other thing that needs to be done is balancing the state budget. He says the state's current instability would lend credibility to things like the gross receipts tax, and that's the last thing new businesses need.

While Governor and Lieutenant Governor are voted on separately in the primary, Murphy is running alongside Republican businessman Andy McKenna.
