Cold, Wind Follows Snow, Sleet in Illinois
CHICAGO (AP) -- The National Weather Service says the heaviest accumulations of snow in Illinois heading into Wednesday should occur in the far northwest part of the state and in northern communities hugging the Wisconsin border.

Meteorologist Mark Ratzer says temperatures in the Chicago area were hovering at or above freezing Tuesday as it saw sleet and rain. The Galesburg area dodged a bullet by not receiving the six or more inches of snow that weather services forecasted. However, the region remains under a WINTER STORM WARNING until 6:00 this evening.

There are other hazards once the current storm rolls out of the state Wednesday: bitter cold and powerful winds. Motorists Wednesday morning reported white-out conditions on Illinois Route 41 and on other highways and county roads, reducing visibility to a quarter-mile or less in some cases.

Ratzer says temperatures in northern Illinois will plummet to near zero during the day Wednesday. It'll feel as cold as 30 below in some places with winds gusting up to 50 miles per hour. The forecast in this area calls for wind gusts possibly reaching 45 miles per hour and a low tonight around zero, with wind chill readings well below zero.
