Report Says Carbon Dioxide Emissions Declining
With the U.N. Conference on Climate Change going on in Denmark, a new report says individual states are causing significant declines in carbon dioxide emissions.

The federal government gets a bad rap from those trying to put a lid on greenhouse gases, but state policies make a big difference, according to a report published by the group Environment Illinois. The report, America on the Move: State Leadership in the Fight Against Global Warming and What it Means for the World, says the United States will reduce global warming pollution by 536 million metric tons per year by 2020, compared to doing nothing. This reduction will come entirely from state actions, says Brian P. Granagan, staff attorney for Environment Illinois.

The reduction is equal to the emissions put out by 42 percent of the cars on the road, or 163 coal-fueled power plants.

Illinois has, for example, established a goal of getting 25 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025, and adopting a statewide building energy code.

The report is available by CLICKING HERE (pdf document).
