FIRST ON WGIL: No Financial Irregularities in Knox County Recorder's Office
POSTED 6:28pm 12/9/09, UPDATED 6:00AM 12/10/09 It didn't take long for a Sterling accounting firm that's tasked with doing Knox County's annual audit to determine that there were no irregularities in one department run by a woman now accused of theft.

Knox County officials issued a statement Wednesday afternoon indicating that Sterling-based Lindgren, Callihan, Van Osdol, and Company found no irregularities in the office of Knox County Recorder.

The county Recorder is Paula Monzo, who was arrested last month after allegedly stealing money from the county Democratic Central over a one-year period while its treasurer.

Monzo was never accused of wrongdoing while on the job, but the Knox County Board instead opted for the special audit just to be sure.

In the statement, County Board Chair Greg Bacon is attributed as saying "A thorough survey of invoices yielded no unusual transactions."

The accelerated audit is expected to cost the county about $1,500, but it means that the firm can now also go through its full audit of all of the county's finances.

Monzo was elected as County Recorder last year after working for over a decade in the Knox County Clerk's office.

The statement claims that Monzo declines to make any sort of public comment. She did smile and wave at reporters as she left a court hearing Tuesday on her criminal case.

She'll next be back in court in that matter January 26th.
