Groups: More Ethics Reforms Needed
More must be done following the signing of the campaign finance reform bill, according to two political watchdogs.

Cindi Canary, director of the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, says there is still more to do to reform Illinois politics and government.

Canary sat on a discussion panel with Mike Lawrence, former director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University. The two talked with Secretary of State employees about how far the state has come and how far it has to go to see real reforms.

Canary supported the reform bill, which the governor signed into law Wednesday, but says there must be additional changes in the future, including limits on contributions from legislative leaders in the general election. She says the law is a good first step because it limits the amount of money coming into campaign coffers.

Lawrence believes the way to ferret out corruption in state government is to better inform the public. He believes early education is the key to a better informed public.
