FIRST ON WGIL: Knox County Health Department Ready to Administer H1N1 Vaccine to General Public -- FULL DETAILS HERE
POSTED 10:20pm 12/10/09 Officials at the Knox County Health Department say they're ready to take their efforts to vaccinate the public from the spread of the H1N1 virus to the next level.

Knox County Public Health Administrator Heidi Britton told the Knox County Board of Health Thursday night the health department should have no problems vaccinating the general public, now that state officials have okayed that starting this coming Tuesday.

Britton told the Board of Health she can't say enough good about how the health department has responded to the initial waves of vaccinations.

"I feel that the Health Department management team and everyone that's been planning H1N1, and the whole health department -- big kudos to them," Britton said. "A lot of work has gone into this. If this happens to us again next year -- which I think it's going to -- we're going to be so on top of it and prepared and, hopefully, it will be just that much better."

Britton says among priority groups, 5-to18-year olds were the highest percentage group to receive the first of a two-recommended doses of H1N1.

There is still one more priority group-only vaccine clinic at the health department: Friday from 10am to 4:30.

The first clinic open to everyone will be Tuesday from 9am to 4:30pm. There are roughly 2,500 doses of the vaccine in either the injectible or mist forms that will be available.
