GOP Gubernatorial Candidate Argues Quinn's Proposed Income Tax Would Tank Illinois' Economy
Governor Pat Quinn is defending his call for an income tax increase after a Republican candidate for governor says a tax hike would kill the economy.

Republican candidate for governor Andy McKenna said an income tax increase would kill the economy and put people out of work. McKenna's comments came at a campaign stop in Chicago this week.

Quinn says any notion that a tax hike would tank the economy or put people out of work is simply not true. "They're in fantasy land and they know it...that's the regrettable thing," Quinn said of McKenna and State Senator Matt Murphy (R-Palatine), who is seeking the office of lieutenant governor. "They're campaigning for public office, they're entitled to do it, but I don't think people have to believe a word they say."

Quinn has been pushing for a 50 percent increase in the income tax rate in order to bring the state out of financial trouble. He would also increase the personal exemption that would offer tax relief for poor and working class families.

The deficit is projected at $13 billion between now and the end of next fiscal year, which is June 30, 2011.
