MDA "Fill the Boot" Campaign a Success in Galesburg
The 2009 MDA Fill the Boot campaign raised $23,119.62 in Galesburg.

The amount of money collected by Galesburg's firefighters during the Labor Day weekend placed Galesburg sixth in a list of over 120 participating Illinois communities.

Communities coming in ahead of Galesburg included Chicago and several of its suburbs, all of which were two and a half times or greater in population. Since beginning its participation in the IAFF (International Association of Fire Fighters) sponsored MDA fundraiser 11 years ago, the Galesburg community has been in the top 10 participating communities, including 2001, when Galesburg placed first.

Eric Hazlett, local IAFF 555 president said, "Galesburg's citizens are very supportive of our involvement with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Even with a slowing economy, the donations are still there. This dedication speaks volumes about our community and its citizens."

The International Association of Firefighters is the largest national sponsor of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). More than 280,000 members of the IAFF in the United States and Canada are pledged to saving lives, both as firefighters and paramedics and as the strongest campaigners for the worldwide research efforts of MDA to eradicate 40 neuromuscular diseases.

The contributions of the firefighters also go towards MDA's summer camps for children, professional and public health education, and other programs.
